St. David’s Day – 1st March

To wish someone a Happy St David’s Day in Welsh you say “Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus”

For people not familiar with the Welsh language, the phrase is pronounced “dee-the goil Dewi ha-peece”

The Welsh celebration of St David’s Day will take place on March 1. St David is the patron saint of Wales, and the day falls on the day of his death, on March 1, 589 AD. The feast day has been regularly celebrated since the canonisation of St David in the 12th century.

Traditional celebration of St David’s Day include wearing daffodils and leeks, which are recognised symbols of both Wales and St David.

Eating traditional Welsh food including cawl (soup) and Welsh rarebit are also part of the celebration.

Other popular dishes include bara brith tea loaf and lamb.
